Korean War veteran Robert Thorne is our veteran of the week. He served honorably during that war as a member of the U.S. Army. He lives in Cordell. We presented him with a cap representing his military service.
The foundation is excited to partner with the Oklahoma Dental Foundation in providing free dental care to veterans from Nov. 11-15. They will bring a mobile clinic and will see patients from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call Lora Malone at 550-8806, Ext. 101, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday to schedule a appointment. We can schedule 10 patients each day.
We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the full week of Christmas so our volunteers can spend time with their families.
One of our drivers, Clayton Lee, has been off the last couple of weeks recuperating from a knee replacement. He is now back on the job transporting veterans to their Veterans Affairs appointments and our location. One of our other drivers, Louie Metseff, took up the slack and pulled extra duty for some of Lee's regular riders. Thanks to both Clayton and Louie for doing their part to help veterans and their families.
We were notified that 32 of the veterans we represent received 100% ratings for their service-connected disabilities. They will receive a combined annual $1,169,336. These men and women will be eligible for our Oklahoma Tax Benefits package that includes sales tax relief, property tax exemption, reduced auto tags, free hunting and fishing license and the exemption of excise tax on vehicles once every three years. Fifty-one veterans were rated 10-90% and will receive an annual combined $782,116. One pension was granted for a yearly amount of $9,072.
Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, we are assisting more than 150 veterans each day. Some of those who visit us are looking for a place to stay for a few days, and we would like to establish a link with some of our Norman hotel and eating establishments willing to give discounts to the veterans who are going to be in town for assistance. If you can help us help our veterans, call Lora Malone at 550-8806, Ext. 101. We are also seeking volunteers to join our team. Please call her or visit us any Tuesday or Thursday morning.
We are a 501c3 nonprofit, which means our services are free to everyone who we assist. We operate on the donations from individuals, business or grants we receive. Our budget each month to provide services for the men and women we assist is over $25,000. This equates to over $300,000 per year in services to veterans and their families. For those of you who want to help, consider becoming a donor. Your gifts should be tax-deductible. You can donate directly online or mail to P.O. Box 592, Washington, OK 73093.
We have four transportation vans we use to take veterans to VA appointments. Our pantry also has food sacks big enough to feed a family for a week at a time. These are available to those who are doing without. We want to do everything possible to make a difference in the lives of the men and women who served our country.
Counselors from veterans centers are here each session, and a Legal Aid representative is here on Thursdays. We look forward to your visit and thank you for trusting us to help you.
We are available every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 1268 N. Interstate Drive in Norman. We open the doors by 5:30 a.m., and we begin working as soon as volunteers have their computers ready.
