Jim Fugate is our volunteer of the week at Dale K. Graham Veteran’s Corner. He served with honor in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. Fugate worked with us for several years in Goldsby. He recently returned to help us make a difference in the lives of other veterans at Faith Pointe Baptist Church. He and his wife, Jo Ann, live in Norman. I have asked him when he is going to start bringing his wife to make volunteering with us a family affair.

As we continue to help more veterans and surviving spouses receive benefits, we need more of you to help us.

Last week, volunteers assisted 177 men and women with their VA claims and questions. Of that number, 64 filed their first claims for VA benefits with us. Last week, I received 12 decision letters on veterans who received a 100 percent rating for their service-connected disabilities. These veterans will receive an annual combined income of $439,419 each year. Before I received the VA rating decisions, many folks never knew to return for a follow-up visit.

Twenty-three veterans received disability ratings from 10 to 90 percent. This group will receive an annual combined income of $279,724 per year. Three surviving spouses were approved for DIC or pension benefits. They will receive a combined annual income of $17, 374 each year.

Last week, we recognized five veterans who served in WWII, the most that we have ever had in one day. We presented a handmade quilt, along with a WWII cap, to each of these real American heroes. Two of these veterans had never filed a claim for VA benefits. One of them had just received his 100 percent rating. I keep telling everyone that I have the best job in town because I’m able to stand beside these veterans who served in that war.

We have lawyers from the Oklahoma Legal Aid office who assist veterans with legal problems. They are available each Tuesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 9, at no cost for veterans who qualify.
