Last week, claims writers and other volunteers from Veterans Corner Inc. on Highway 9 West attended the annual Joint Service Officer Training Seminar at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City.

The training provided the latest information on a variety of subjects related to veterans' benefits, pension and mental health. The seminar was sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Corner will be closed Thanksgiving Day. The holidays, such as Thanksgiving, present a challenge for military personnel, who can be stationed far from home and their families. Our prayers go out to those who cannot be with family and friends during these special times. You can help veterans who serve, honor and protect by volunteering your time, donating items or simply by making a cash contribution to a worthy cause.

There are several ways in which you may give to the Veterans Corner mission of "Veterans Helping Veterans." In support of #GivingTuesday on Nov. 27, Facebook is partnering with PayPal to match up to $7 million in donations made on Facebook to eligible U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits, which include Veterans Corner.

Facebook and PayPal will match donations, starting at 7 a.m. Nov. 27 and continue matching donations to nonprofits until the $7M match runs out. To donate, start at facebook.com/VeteransCornerInc and click on the "Donate" button under the cover video.

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support Veterans Corner every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you'll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization.

On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you need to select Veterans Corner (Oklahoma City) as your charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. Then, every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.

Because Veterans Corner is a 501(c)(3) organization, all gifts and donations are tax deductible. Donations can be sent to: Veterans Corner, P.O. Box 722160, Norman, OK 73070-8635, or you may contact Jerry Baxter on any Thursday at 387-5070 to make recurrent arrangements.

Contact Benny Crowe at 641-2555 or bennycrowe@aol.com if you would like to join our all-volunteer team.

Thursday, Dec. 20, will be the last day of the year that we will be open until Jan. 2, so that our volunteers can spend time together with their own family and friends.

If you are a veteran or surviving spouse in need of a food pantry box or a medical equipment loan, please contact Jimmy Flowers at "the Corner" on any Thursday.

Veterans Corner is at 3805 SE 44th St., Newcastle, OK 73065, about two miles west of Interstate 35, Exit 106, on the north side of State Highway 9 West and is open from 8 a.m. to noon Mondays through Thursdays.
