Oklahoma Festival Ballet and Contemporary Dance Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma's resident ballet and modern dance companies, will present SummerDance Rocks! 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Reynolds Performing Arts Center on OU's campus.
A twist on ballet and contemporary dance, the evening will feature music from Rachmaninoff to the Beatles plus Buddy Holly and original compositions. The production includes four premiers by School of Dance faculty members Austin Hartel, Mary Margaret Holt and Jeremy Lindberg.
"Sapphire," a new ballet choreographed by School of Dance assistant professor Jeremy Lindberg, opens the program. Set to an original composition by Lincoln Torrey, the ballet explores a fantasy world where sapphires emerge from the earth and come to life as beautiful dancers.
"Hegira" is a duet choreographed by CDO artistic director Austin Hartel.
"This work was inspired by the sculptures of Rodin," Hartel said. "It has been called liquid sculpture." Hartel also will present a brand new work in the production.
School of Dance director Mary Margaret Holt has choreographed a light, energetic ballet called "All You Need Is ..." featuring eight Beatles songs, which recalls the mood and music of the '60s.
"It is a great pleasure to feature our alumni guest artists Rub?n Gerding and David Barocio in 'All You Need Is.' Both have a superb sense of style and bring wonderful performance qualities as well as strong technique to the production," Holt said.
Barocio has performed with the Eugene/Boise Ballet and is a member of Quad Cities Ballet. Gerding performs with Metropolitan Classical Ballet, having also danced with Texas Ballet Theatre. Both are graduates of the School of Dance.
On a different note, the production also includes "Elegie," a ballet for two couples choreographed by Holt. Set to Rachmaninoff's piano solo, Elegie, audience members will have the opportunity to hear this hauntingly beautiful music played live during the performance by pianist John Frye. It will be danced by Gerding and Barocio partnering Tara Gragg and Kerstin Stayton.
The production ends with a new ballet simply called "Buddy." Choreographed by Holt to some of Buddy Holly's greatest hits, the ballet includes favorites such as "That'll Be the Day," "Peggy Sue," "Raining in My Heart" and "Love is Strange."
Lighting designers for the production are Jerry Lewis, Tyler Coffman and Kirk Fitzgerald and costume designs are by Patricia Mason and Jeremy Barney.
