Country music superstar and actor Dwight Yoakam will appear in concert June 27 at Thunderbird Casino. His hits include "Ain't That Lonely Yet," "Fast As You" and "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere." The current tour is in support of his latest album, "Blame the Vain," which dropped last summer.

Yoakam realized in the 1980s he needed to find an alternate highway for his nostalgic brand of country music. So, he took it to an unlikely audience: the roots rock fans of Los Angeles.

It was a strange chemistry, but Dwight achieved a new audience for his heady combination of gutsy country emotion and rock and roll electricity.

He has also fashioned a persona that is fiercely vital, dangerous and independent. Part of that can be seen in his many film appearances, including as a thug in "Panic Room," an ill-tempered step-father in "Sling Blade" and recently as a county sheriff in the Tommy Lee Jones film "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada." His next onscreen appearance will be as a ruthless banker in the forthcoming "Bandidas" with Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek.

The Dwight Yoakam concert begins 8 p.m. June 27 at Thunderbird Casino. Doors open at 7. For more information or tickets, call Thunderbird Casino at 360-9270 or visit gettix.net.
