A semi truck crash and fire on Interstate 35 caused road closures early Wednesday, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
OHP Lt. Kera Philippi said the solo driver of a 2020 freightliner failed to turn with the road while traveling northbound on I-35 and struck a bridge pillar at 2:55 a.m., which caused the vehicle to catch fire. The Norman Police Department and the Norman Fire Department were first to respond, followed by OHP Trooper Austin Ellis. No one was injured in the one-vehicle wreck.
In his report, Ellis said he suspects the driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, fell asleep and cited the driver for failure to devote attention. The inside and middle lanes at I-35 northbound at Tecumseh and the SH-77 bridge southbound over I-35 were closed. I-35 at SH-77 was closed for over five hours, reopening at 8:37 a.m.
Philippi said parts of the vehicle melted from the blaze. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation assessed the bridge and deemed the damage to be cosmetic only, requiring power washing to clean smoke damage.
