Westmoore's Katelin Cherry won the girls Mid-State conference title at Irving Middle School last week. She ran the course in 12 minutes and three seconds.
Despite the victory, Cherry's performance left her far from satisfied as she prepares for her third straight trip to the state meet.
"I guess I didn't really mentally prepare for the race," she said. "It was not very good for me. I am excited for state. My times have been good, except for today. I am a little shocked I ran that time."
Cherry finished 28 seconds in front of NHS' Angelica Martinez, who took third. Norman's Kaleigh Key held off the Jaguars' Alex Tarr for fourth place.
However, it was Westmoore that took the team title with a score of 35. Edmond Memorial (41), Norman (64), North (123) , Moore (141) and Midwest City (152) round out the field.
While Cherry was not happy with her outing, Norman's Patrick Bowles set a new personal best for a cross country course. Even though he had no competition within sight, Bowles found a way to push himself down the stretch. He will need to do the same for himself and his team at state.
"Practice, practice, practice, practice," Bowles said. "Susie Rojas, our coach, works with us on how to finish the best we can. It says I'm in pretty good shape for state and on the right track."
Despite Bowles taking the individual title, NHS took third overall in the varsity boys race. Edmond Memorial won the team title with a score of 38. Moore was 13 points back of the Bulldogs in second place.
Both the Lions and Westmoore will be in Marlow Thursday for the regional cross country meet. This is thel ast compeition befroe the state meet Oct. 27.
