A state appeals court has set a June 17 execution date for a death row inmate.
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Thursday scheduled the date for Purcell resident Jeffrey David Matthews.
Matthews was convicted and sentenced to death for the Jan. 27, 1994, murder of 77-year-old Otis Earl Short during a robbery of Short’s home in McClain County. His 1995 trial was moved to Cleveland County because of pretrial publicity.
The 38-year-old Matthews also was convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson requested an execution date last month after the U.S. Supreme Court denied Matthews’ final appeal.
