More county residents are getting hitched than divorced, according to statistics released Friday by Cleveland County Court Clerk Rhonda Hall.

Residents filed for 1,753 marriage licenses in 2008, while registering 1,597 divorces.

The marriage total increased from 1,662 in 2007; divorces increased from 1,577 in 2007.

The number of protective orders filed in 2008 was 718, down from 732 the previous year.

Civil suits above $10,000 were filed 2,644 times in 2008, up from 2,407 in 2007.

Civil suits less than $10,000 numbered 2,621, up from 2,441 in 2007.

Residents filed 5,411 small claim actions in 2008, down from 5,413 in 2007.

A total of 1,575 felonies were filed in 2008, down from 1,966 in 2007. Misdemeanors numbered 3,118, up from 2,878 in 2006.

Judges approved 99 search warrants in 2008, down from 140 the previous year.

The number of adoptions decreased to 226 in 2008, from 255 in 2007.

Paternity suits numbered 480 in 2008, up from 473 in 2007.
