For the second year in a row, Norman North debate and drama students took the pole position in the race for the state speech title at the OSSAA West Oklahoma Regional speech contest March 9-10 at Rose State College.

On its way to winning the overall team sweepstakes, North qualified 29 entries to the state tournament.

The top individual story was the performance of double regional champion Sarah Durica, who earned a perfect record of 6-0 with 36 speaker points in Lincoln-Douglas Debate for the second year in a row and who also chalked up an unblemished record in Foreign Extemp on her way to winning that championship, as well.

Other state qualifiers included: Savannah Collins in Foreign Extemp; Kirk Forthman in Poetry; Rebecca Holliman in Lincoln-Douglas and Foreign Extemp; Hilary Hudson in Humorous Interp; Eli Hull in Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp and Humorous Duet; Ross Johnson in Humorous Interp and Humorous Duet; Jarrett Langford in Monologue and Humorous Duet; Callie Lawrence in Original Oratory and Monologue; Brett Marley in Poetry and Humorous Duet; Taylor Marlow in Standard Oratory; Kyle Mellon in Domestic Extemp; Summer Nolan in Prose; Riley Pierce in Standard Oratory; Drew Powell in Lincoln-Douglas and Domestic Extemp; Royce Strider in Standard Oratory; Chantal Taylor in Foreign Extemp, Kayla Travis in Domestic Extemp; Jade Webb in Standard Oratory and Prose; and J.P. Wilson in Foreign Extemp.

State alternates included Matt Jacobs and Brad Whitehead in Humorous Interp, Jarrett Langford in Poetry, Kate McNeely in Standard Oratory and Prose, Sabrina Ramsey in Foreign Extemp, Carmen Weeks in Prose and Zihao Xia in Domestic Extemp.

The OSSAA State Speech Tournament takes place April 12-14 at the University of Oklahoma.
