The school bells will remain silent in Norman for the fourth consecutive day as Norman Public Schools has canceled classes today.
"I know it's frustrating," said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Siano to the board of education at Wednesday's special meeting. "This has been a very difficult and trying storm."
While many highly traveled streets in the interior of Norman have cleared up, Siano said several rural sections of the district and school parking lots are still under sheets of ice.
"The side streets and parking lots are not clear and are still very dangerous," he said.
With today's closure, Norman has missed six instructional days this school year due to weather. The first two were the result of a late November, early December snowstorm. NPS already adjusted its calendar to absorb those lost days. The district now is faced with four additional days to make up. One possibility is to extend the school year beyond Memorial Day, but Siano said there still are variables to consider.
"We could go after Memorial Day," he said. "We also will consider other options ... as many as we can."
In Moore, school administrators said the district's 27 schools will remain closed today.
"Many of the roads on our western route are still very dangerous," said superintendent, Deborah Arato. "Because of that and the remaining ice, we've canceled classes for Thursday."
While the district's school buildings suffered little damage from the storm, many school parking lots, Arato said, were "covered" with ice.
"At Fisher Elementary School, we've removed hunks of ice nine inches thick," she said. "It just keeps melting and refreezing."
Arato said the ice is so think in some places that de-icing chemicals aren't working. "It's a big problem. What we need is some sunlight."
Currently, the district has spent about $7,500 to clean up from the storm.
