UPDATE 8 p.m. — According to Norman Public Safety Information Officer Sarah Jensen, officers responded to the 2600 block of Van Buren Street at about 3:15 p.m. today in regard to a welfare check.
Once on scene, officers made contact with the subject of the welfare check and attempted to speak with him.
At some point, the man pulled a firearm and pointed it at the two officers. The officers then pulled their firearms and fired, striking the man.
Jensen said officers rendered medical attention to the man until EMSSTAT arrived on scene.
The man was transported to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. No other citizens or officers were injured during the incident. The identity of both the suspect and the officers are being withheld at this time.
The department has placed the two officers involved in the incident on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
