A recent conversation with a prominent Norman resident went like this: Who are your neighbors? "I'm not really sure of his name but he works in the city." How long has he lived there? "About five years."

Five years and you don't know your neighbor's name. That's what it has come to in some Norman neighborhoods. In this hustle, bustle, multi-tasking world we live in, we don't often take time to get to know those folks who share our streets.

On Aug. 2, that all could change with a simple gesture like sitting outside and welcoming visitors. From 6:30 p.m. to 10?p.m., residents are encouraged to turn on their lights and spend the evening getting to know their neighbors.

Consider it an early Halloween, only without the costumes and the blowing leaves and treats are optional. Norman police are looking to know which neighborhoods are planning events so they can send representatives. Council members and the mayor have been known to drop in on gatherings.

The local night out is part of the National Night Out sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. We'll see you on the streets.
