HORNING: Both Tigers, T-Wolves can win it all, maybe even one over the other

Kyle Phillips / The Transcript

Norman High's Myka Perry puts up a shot during the Crosstown Clash basketball game, Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Norman North High School. Both teams begin the Class 6A state tournament Friday in Tulsa.

The Norman High girls will begin the year where it ended last season — No. 1.

The OSSAA released its Week 1 boys and girls basketball rankings. The Tigers, winners of last season's 6A state title, checked in at No. 1 after starting the season with wins over a pair of Florida programs — Braden River and Bishop Kenny — last week.

The Tigers received 21 first-place votes. No. 3 Booker T. Washington, No. 4 Union and No. 6 Sapulpa also earned first-place votes.

The Moore girls checked in at No. 2 in the poll, while Norman North begins the year at No. 5.

The Southmoore boys begin the season at No. 2 in the 6A rankings and received a first-place vote. The only team in front of the SaberCats is Booker T. Washington, which knocked Southmoore out of the state tournament last season.

The NHS boys rank No. 14 and the North boys are No. 16 in the initial poll.
