Moore Hgh vs Mustang

Moore High Quarterback Daniel Hishaw avoids a tackle Friday night in a game against Mustang.

MOORE — As Austin Gross rumbled down the field for a touchdown reception from his quarterback, Daniel Hishaw Jr., their Moore Lions team appeared to have Mustang right where they wanted them.

But just when it was looking so right, it turned wrong for the Lions. Instead it was the Broncos who found the answers, keeping Moore scoreless the final 23 minutes of the game and flexing their own offensive muscle in a 49-35 victory in Friday night's regular season finale at Moore Schools Stadium.

With the defeat, the Lions finish fourth place in District 2 of Class 6A-1 and will begin next week's playoffs with a road game at Edmond Santa Fe.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the teams trade scores on seven of eight series, the Lions had a chance for a huge stop in the closing seconds. Twice from the Moore 2 yardline, Mustang came up short, with Curion Walker stopping Colt Humphrey at the goal line as time expired to preserve a 28-21 Moore lead.

That was doubly big with Moore getting the ball to start the third quarter and then taking a 35-21 lead just 48 seconds into the half on Hishaw's 61-yard strike up the seam to Gross.

Moore actually held Mustang on the next series and had a chance to take control of the game but was forced to punt from its end zone. That would be a sign of things to come as the Mustang defense continued to make plays from there.

And on the other side of the ball came the Broncos' one-two rushing attack of Khary Brown and Harvey Phillips. Over their next five possessions, the Broncos scored the game's final four touchdowns - all on runs by Brown - while forcing four Moore turnovers in the last 16 minutes of game time.

The defeat came despite another massive effort from Hishaw in his final home game. The senior quarterback carried 22 times for 184 yards and all four of Moore's touchdowns in the first half. He also completed 12 of 19 passes for 207 yards and played nearly every snap on defense.

Phillips carried 25 times for 154 yards for the Broncos, while Brown had 19 rushes for 152 yards and five touchdowns in the game. The win earned Mustang a first-round playoff game next week against Jenks.

Moore outgained Mustang 446-400 for the night but the Broncos stepped up significantly on defense in the second half. After the pass from Hishaw to Gross, Moore managed only 55 more yards and never again crossed midfield.

Win or lose, it was the final regular season game for a talented senior class that has brought Moore back up the ladder in 6A football. This marks the first time since 2005 that the Lions have reached the postseason three consecutive years.

Thanks to those efforts, they all have some more football to play this November.
