Howling winds made par a precious commodity, and Norman’s Casey Todd managed to stay right at it Monday in the first round of the Oklahoma Golf Association’s Junior Boys Championship at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course.

Todd, who attends Norman North, carded an even-par 72 and is tied for the first-round lead with

Tulsa’s Cole Wiederkehr.

Elk City’s Tyler Russell and Edmond’s Greg O’Connor are one shot back at 1 over.

With a south wind blowing in excess of 25 miles per hour, scoring was tough. None of the 56 players who teed off managed to break par.

Talor Gooch, of Midwest City and Karsten Majors, of Bixby, are tied for fifth at two over. Benjamin Gonzalez (Edmond), Nathan Chambers (Purcell), Michael Elliott (Tulsa), Daniel McMurry (Ardmore), Hunter Sparks (Oklahoma City) and Chandler Rusk (Edmond) all shot 75s and are three shots off the leaders’ pace.

Norman’s Jett Johnson is four strokes off the lead after opening with a 76 and Purcell’s Jed Williams opened with an 81. Norman’s Matt Krutz carded an 87 to round out a healthy local contingent in the event.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today with tee times beginning at 8:10 a.m.
