Westwood Invitational 2019: JR Hurley, Grant Duffy reunite as competitors in championship flight

JR Hurley (left) and Grant Duffy reunite at the 44th annual Westwood Invitational at Westwood Park Golf Course in Norman. The two golfers are competing against each other after playing together at Sam Houston State.

J.R. Hurley entered his senior year at Sam Houston State as the golf team’s lone senior.

Hurley embraced his leadership role and aimed to make the freshmen on the team’s 2008-09 roster feel welcome.

“I tried to make sure everyone was hanging out,” Hurley said.

He and then-Bearkats newcomer Grant Duffy quickly became friends and remain close to this day.

The former teammates haven’t played together since their time in Huntsville, Texas. The two golfers reunited, however, as competitors at the 44th annual Westwood Invitational on Friday.

“It's fun,” Hurley said. “We've played a few team events together but never an individual stroke-play [tournament] where you're having to putt in your own putts and hit your own shots. It was fun to play with him again because we haven’t done that in 10 years.”

It's only fitting Hurley, a Norman native and resident, is a Westwood veteran, while Duffy is making his tournament debut.

Duffy says he’s tried to make it up to Westwood before. He finally made it up from his Dallas suburb home in The Colony, Texas.

“I've been wanting to come for a few years, I just hadn't made it up” Duffy said. “... It sounds like a fun tournament. J.R.'s had success at it in the past. It's a fun course. If you can get some putts going in, it's an easy course that you can take advantage of.”

Hurley is four years removed from his only Westwood championship flight victory. He seemed to make good use of his experience with a 7-under 63 and shares the championship-flight lead with Cory Montgomery.

His former teammate, on the other hand, shot a 3-over 73 in his first glimpse at the course.

“I've got a little ways to go,” Duffy said with a laugh.

Hurley was quick to follow up his former teammate’s comment.

“That's not typical,” Hurley said. “He'll play better tomorrow.”

The golfers’ camaraderie started with Hurley’s initiative to bring the golf team closer together.

Hurley already lived with a few of his teammates in what they referred to as “the golf house.”

“Everybody always asked if I was in a fraternity,” Duffy said. “And I was like 'No, I play on the golf team.'

“It's kind of your fraternity.”

Duffy and Hurley’s second round will begin at the tenth hole at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Duffy will look to carry some of the momentum from birdieing two of his last three holes Friday, while Hurley will try to maintain his round-one lead.

Championship flight

Both Hurley and Montgomery shot a 7-under 63 to lead the field through 18 holes.

Four-time champion Kelsey Cline, 2017 winner Joseph Lemieux and Erik Haworth are tied for third after shooting a 5-under 65.

Masters flight

Blake Garland (67) emerged as the Day 1 leader. Although, Trey Maddox (69) isn’t far behind with the Masters flight’s only other sub-70 score on Friday.

Former first-flight winner Mike Holzer (71) grabbed sole possession of third in the standings, while Eric Dissell, Blake Nelson and Josh Hosler are tied for fourth with matching scores of 73.

First flight

Blake Thompson (71) jumped out to a narrow lead.

2018 second-flight winner John Gustafson (72) and Dane DeSpain (73) are in second and third, respectively.

Both Russell Barfield and Mitchell Webb shot a 74 for a tie for fourth.

Second flight

Westwood veteran Ameil Shadid shot a 73 to take command of the second flight.

Although, Jared Lyons (74), Greg Harjo (76), Chad Nightingale (76) and Jeff Penny (76) are close.

Thirdflight

Jacob Hendrickson (79) secured the only sub-80 score of the third flight.

He leads the pack with Steve Heck (80), Harper Ward (81), Connor Baumann (82), Dwayne Huddleston (82), Rich Comes (82) and Kris Tomlinson (82) trailing.

Fourth flight

Ken Weatherford (57) pulled out to a Day 1 lead.

Lonnie Burks (61) and Larry Saxon (61) shared second in the group, while Butch Roberts (63) and Jeremy Moore (65) round out the best five scores.
