JR Hurley's bid for a second Westwood Invitational crown seemed all but lost.

The former Norman North golfer birdied four of his first seven holes before hitting a double bogey on the eighth.

"I thought I ruined my day," he said.

Far from it.

Hurley rattled off birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes. He capped his heat check with an eagle on the 16th.

The Norman native finished with a 5-under 65 on Sunday. Newcastle native Dalton Daniel made a push for the title, securing Day 3's low round with a 7-under 63.

Hurley's 196 three-round total was enough, however, to hold off Daniel by a stroke and claim his second championship-flight victory.

"It’s cool, man," Hurley said. "I was really happy after the first day because I knew I was going to be in contention. And it’s just fun to compete. That’s why I play. Getting a second one, it’s pretty cool. It feels good."

Hurley shared the flight lead with Cory Montgomery following the first round. But he was two strokes off the lead entering the third round after posting a 2-under 68 on Saturday.

Hurley was somewhat peeved when he wasn't lumped into the final group to tee off at Westwood Park Golf Course on Sunday.

"I’ve always been a guy that likes to know where I stand," Hurley said. "I think you can kind of dictate your game by it. So, I would’ve liked to have known. I kind of knew where I was anyway, because you get all these guys following and they’re like this guy is doing this or that, but you’re not ever for sure."

Hurley still managed to claim his first Westwood title since 2015 with his clutch back nine.

"It was kind of a crazy good finish," he said.

Daniel, a Cal State Fullerton golfer, placed second in the flight. JD Metzger capped his weekend with a 198 total for third.

Fourth-place finisher Payte Owen (199) shot the championship flight’s only other sub-200 score. Cory Montgomery and Ryan Munson shared fifth with matching 201 three-round totals.

Masters flight

Blake Garland edged Trey Maddox and Blake Nelson for his first Masters flight title.

Garland fired a 4-over 74 to finish with a 209 three-round total. His Sunday score was his highest round of the weekend, but he managed to fend off his Day 2 co-leader Maddox, who shot a 5-over 75.

Nelson nearly caught Garland thanks to a hole-in-one on the fourth hole. He finished the tournament with a 210, however, to tie for second in the flight.

Reagan Johnson finished with a 217 and Josh Hosler ended with a 219.

First flight

Blake Thompson shot his lowest round of the weekend to win the first flight.

Thompson led the group after Day 1 but stumbled in the standings with a 6-over 76 on Saturday. He recovered by firing a 2-under 68 to top Derek Dodd and John Gustafson.

Dodd and Gustafson tied for second with matching weekend totals of 218.

Josh Simpson ended the tournament with a 219 and Russell Barfield notched a 221.

Second flight

Warren Murray cruised to win the second-flight title. Murray shot a 2-over 72 on Sunday to finish with a 221 total for the weekend.

Second-place finisher Ameil Shadid shot a 79 in the final round and fell by seven strokes.

Jared Lyons (229), Jeff Penny (230) and Greg Harjo (230) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Third flight

Richard Ricks sealed his first third-flight victory by beating Connor Baumann.

Ricks and Baumann each fired a 7-over 77 on Sunday to clinch matching three-round totals of 241.

Ricks then knocked off Baumann on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Steve Heck and Harper Ward each finished with a total of 243. Jacob Hendrickson finished fifth in the standings with a 246.

Fourth flight

Larry Saxon fired a 75 to finish with a net 195 total.

Saxon bested Jeremy Moore and Ken Weatherford, who both finished with scores of 198. Although, Saxon’s unadjusted score would’ve been good enough to win the third flight at 236.

Butch Roberts (201) and Tony Atteberry (202) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the flight.
