Veterans Month in Norman

U.S. Army veteran Roger Gallagher receives a proclamation Tuesday from Mayor Lynne Miller proclaiming November as Veterans Month in Norman. The 2018 Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Ceremony, with the theme “Honor to Serve,” will be Nov. 11 at Reaves Park.

A parade traveling from the Stephenson Research Center north on Jenkins Ave. to Reaves Park will kick off festivities at 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. a memorial ceremony, led by Major General Rita Aragon with keynote speaker Brigadier General Paul D. Costilow, will take place at the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial in Reaves Park.

In addition to light refreshments, ceremony attendees can enjoy static displays of military vehicles, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol helicopter, a Chinook helicopter and nearly 25 classic cars from the Canadian River Cruisers. Reaves Park is located at 2501 S. Jenkins Ave.

Applications to be in the parade are being accepted through Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. No political entities will be permitted. For more information contact the Norman Parks and Recreation Department at 405-366-5472.

The city council also passed a resolution Tuesday proclaiming November Native American Heritage Month in Norman.
